Did you know that there are 147 nursing homes in Arizona? Today, the term nursing home refers to medical facilities to which patients are admitted to after a hospitalization. The medical services are wide ranging but generally focus on rehabilitation be it speech, occupational or physical.
Did you also know that in addition to state surveys medicare rates these facilities? Of the 147 facilities in Arizona, only 52 have a rating of 5 of 5 stars and there are 58 with a rating of 3 stars or less.
It is important to stress that when you or a loved on is discharging from the hospital to a skilled nursing facility you have a choice in the facility. Given a choice most would select one of the 5-star facilities in their area, but star ratings do not give the whole story.
When looking at a facility it’s important to consider staffing levels. Are there enough staff to respond to calls in a timely fashion? If you or a loved one need physical therapy do the staffing level allow for an average of 10 minutes of therapy a day or an hour?
What about quality care measures that look at the outcomes of past patients?
Oftentimes, it is the skilled nursing facility that makes the determination if it is safe to discharge a patient back home or if they need to discharge to assisted living. How well the patient rehabilitates at the facility is usually the largest determining factor in if they discharge home or to assisted living. This is why is it crucially important to make sure the skilled nursing facility selected will give the best possible opportunity to safely return home.
